Discover why St Petersburg and the Gulf Coast are becoming such an attractive destination for experienced cyclists looking for sunshine, scenic routes, quiet roads, dedicated trails and great café stops
Welcome to St. Petersburg
All year round cycling at its best
Why St Petersburg.
If you’re a Club Cyclist who enjoys riding with a club, Florida probably might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning your next cycling trip.
It should be – and here’s why
For Club Cyclists, winter, and even some summers can be frustrating. The roads are wet, daylight is short and the weather often determines whether a planned ride actually happens.
St Petersburg offers a very different experience than the more common retreats to warmer European countries.
The Pinellas Peninsula is predominantly flat, with an extensive network of paved cycling trails, quieter residential roads and coastal routes. The area also provides access to beaches, parks, waterfronts and numerous cafés and restaurants.
For an experienced cyclist, that means you can maintain your mileage, explore new routes and enjoy long days outdoors — without having to spend your winter climbing mountains.
A two, three or four-week stay gives you time to establish a routine, discover different routes and enjoy the many other things Florida offers on the days when you don’t want to ride.
Five reasons to put St. Pete on your cycling list
It’s flat
If you’re looking for somewhere to maintain mileage rather than climb mountains, this area is ideal. For those wanting to build on time-trial speed, there are routes with almost no chance of having to stop or pause and with smooth, straight surfaces.
It’s sunny almost every day
Known as the “Sunshine City” St. Petersburg boasts more than 350 days of sunshine each year.
Winter cycling in shorts and a jersey is a very attractive alternative to a wet February ride in Britain – or even a wet July one!
Variety
You can combine coastal roads, dedicated trails, residential streets and longer-distance rides. From flat-out time trial training to leisurely country rides to a relaxing meander around the parks and public spaces, you can mix your choice of rides each with its own stunning views.
Great stops
Florida’s café culture isn’t quite the same as a British cycling café, but there are plenty of excellent places for coffee, breakfast and lunch. When it’s 80 degrees most cyclists prefer cool drinks or ice-creams than coffee or cakes.
More than cycling
A long stay means your partner doesn’t need to be a cyclist. Beaches, restaurants, shopping, golf, museums and the attractions of St Petersburg and Tampa are all close by and so there’s plenty to do for non-cyclists or when you’re not cycling.

Why club cyclists like St. Petersburg
Isla del Sol – the ideal cycling base
Start your rides from Isla del Sol
Isla Del Sol is particularly well positioned for exploring the southern Pinellas Peninsula. You can join the Pinellas trail from here and decide whether you want stay local for rides of up to 25 miles or connect up with the extensive trail network and plan a much longer ride of 70+ miles
Local Rides include:
Fort De Soto - 25 miles
St Pete Beach & Passe Grille - 10 miles
Downtown St Petersburg - 20 miles
Skyway Bridge fishing pier - 20 miles
Pinellas trail in various directions 20 to 100 miles
And for longer rides, you can ride north towards Clearwater, Dunedin and Tarpon Springs which would give you a good round trip of 60-90 miles.
Isla Del Sol is an island approximately 1 mile across and is situated in the Boca Ciega Bay between the Gulf coast and Downtown St. Petersburg. Perfect for cycling due to its connection with the Pinellas Trail and just one mile from St Pete Beach means morning bike rides can be followed by lunch at one of the many local restaurants and then afternoons at the beach and maybe a ‘sundowner’ cocktail before heading home.

Rides
Isla Del Sol to Fort De Soto. 25 miles
A favourite of many
Approximately 20 miles the route takes you across the Bayway towards Tierra Verde and Fort De Soto, with the opportunity to explore the park itself. If you are looking for a dragstrip to train for time trials or just a flat, scenic route to take in the beautiful mangroves and sea views this is an ideal for your morning routine.
Fort De Soto has a roughly 7-mile paved multi-use trail running through the park, connecting the campground, beaches, boat ramp and historic fort which dates back to the American Civil War.
Why club cyclists like it
The St Petersburg Bicycle Club itself regularly rides to Fort De Soto, with one of its published rides giving approximately 45 miles round trip from St Petersburg.
With no traffic lights or crossings the ride gives you around 20 miles of almost uninterrupted riding on flat, smooth roads and for those that want to stop for a coffee break there are two places to stop and enjoy refreshment while taking in the stunning white sand beach views
St. Petersburg Waterfront & Pass-a-Grille – 30 miles
Beach-City-Beach in 2 hours
From Isla Del Sol this is an ideal circuit which takes you into downtown St. Petersburg where you can visit the marina, take in the stunning views and enjoy the wide choice of places to stop for a coffee and a pastry – or a cool drink. it’s a roughly 30-mile ride with plenty of opportunity to ride fast or a more leisurely ride with coffee stops along the way
The St Petersburg Bicycle Club regularly rides this circuit at a weekend and so it is a popular ride with the local club riders with a brisk ride over the bridge and down onto Passe Grille where you can stop for refreshments, ice creams or lunch at the beach facing Paradise Grille
If you want a flat, fast ride with amazing scenery and café stops this route takes some beating. You can complete the entire route using the trail or take the southern loop which takes you around some of the exclusive neighbourhoods before rejoining the bayway trail back to Isla and Passe-a-grille.
Isla Del Sol to Skyway Bridge – 20 miles
Fast ride - amazing views
The iconic Skyway Bridge is the gateway to the Tampa Bay. This ride takes you along the original bridge which was replaced in 1980 and is now the World’s longest fishing pier. Most of this flat and scenic route can be done on dedicated trails with just 2 miles along quiet roads around the boat marina before rejoining the trail that takes you all the way to the bridge. The trail is quiet and is ideal for a brisk ride while taking in more stunning views of Tampa bay and the Skyway Bridge as you approach it from the north.
With sea views left and right this ride suits those that want to push hard with almost no stops whilst enjoying the most stunning views of the bay.
There are no coffee shops at the pier but you can stop halfway at the “Paradeco” Coffee Roasters poolside bar at the Skybeach Resort for a drink, snack and refill your bottles while enjoying the stunning view over the bay. You will be asked to walk your bikes the short distance to the coffee shop bar.
Our advice
Find out the timings of the cruise ships leaving Tampa - usually late afternoon. These huge ships sail under this bridge with just feet to spare. This is a great place to view this amazing event
Isla to St. Pete Waterfront to Snell Isle – 25 miles
The perfect leisure ride
Take the Pinellas Trail into downtown St Petersburg where there are plenty of places to stop for drinks and snacks. Once there you can cycle or walk or take the ‘train’ to the end of the pier with stunning views over the bay.
Then, a leisurely ride north through Vinoy Park for 1.5 miles along the beach line to Snell Isle where you can ride around the immaculately groomed quiet streets of some of the most desirable real estate in Florida. With the park on your left and the ocean and beach to your right this is not a fast part of the ride as you share the path with runners, rollerbladers and other cyclists so you can just enjoy the views, the chilled atmosphere for a really memorable experience. If you want to take stunning photos to send back home then this route is perfect.
You can choose your route back to Isla Del Sol by retracing on the Pinellas Trail or taking the Southern Loop through the south St Petersburg district.
This is perfect ‘club run’ territory where stopping off for drinks and some snacks adds to the Florida cycling experience
The Pinellas Trail
Florida has put to great use former railroad corridors to create this amazing cycling network of dedicated routes which threads through the countryside and connects with key destinations and road networks.
Florida’s Cycling Jewel
The Pinellas trail is one of Florida’s great cycling secrets. It is a protected recreational corridor which is enjoyed by thousands of cyclists, runners and those that enjoy a calm walk to take in the scenery and the varied views of beach, sea, mangroves and rural countryside.
For those that want to really get the miles in, this network of trails is the one to use. With over 60 miles of trail including various stop off points you can design your perfect route with plenty of cafes and places to stop and refresh along the way.
The Pinellas Trail gives experienced cyclists the opportunity to build anything from a short local ride to a substantial day in the saddle
The trail runs north from St Petersburg towards Tarpon Springs and connects with other trail systems such as the Florida coast to coast trail which takes you all the way to the Atlantic East coast at Titusville near Cape Canaverel. Some 250 miles of which 220 miles are currently already complete.
Isla Del Sol is located towards the southern end of this network so you can ride locally or access this vast network as far north as Tarpon Springs and for the super ambitious, you can take a 2-3 day trip and connect with the coast to coast trail taking you some 200 miles to the Space Coast north of Cape Canaveral.
Most riders find that the 80 mile round trip to Tarpon Springs is a challenging enough ride.
Remember, if you’re here winter or summer, it is important to stay hydrated and always use a high SPF sun lotion
Isla del Sol to Dunedin – a perfect ride to breakfast day - 60 miles
Florida’s small piece of Scotland
The ride to Dunedin is perfect for an early morning start, taking the Pinellas Trail northward past Clearwater and, at 30 miles, and ideal for a breakfast stop. There is a popular cycling café there called Kafe Racer – a café and cycle shop where you can get a hearty fuel stop before your 30 miles back to Isla Del Sol.
Dunedin has prospered through the existence of the Pinellas Trail which brings thousands of tourists to the town each year and enabled small businesses, cafes and bike shops to flourish.
St Petersburg Bicycle Club has club run there which they call the Dunedin breakfast ride, using the Pinellas Trail, with an optional extension towards Clearwater
Dunedin is a great candidate for a longer ride because the destination itself gives the ride a purpose and the reward of a well-earned breakfast to refuel for the return leg.
Isla del Sol to Tarpon Springs – 80 miles
Build the mileage
A great day’s riding for those that want to get the miles in. The route along the Pinellas trail is flat apart from bridges over major road junctions. Tarpon springs has plenty of places to get refreshments, some lunch and, at 40 miles is the perfect halfway stop.
Known as Little Greece, Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the United States. Also known as the “Sponge Capital of the World,” Tarpon Springs on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is a destination like no other. The waterfront community celebrates its deep Greek roots and sponge-diving heritage with food, festivals, and events, and its unique history is on display in its buildings, businesses, and famous sponge docks.
There are of course plenty of authentic Greek restaurants serving some of the best Greek cuisine in the USA.
A great destination ride with an atmospheric, cultural and historic place to stop for refreshments and a light lunch before heading back to Isla Del Sol.
What’s it like cycling in Florida?
What a UK cyclist can expect?
Florida — A Great Destination All Year Round
Florida is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors at any time of year, with each season offering something a little different.
Winter — ideal for exploring
Florida’s winter months are particularly appealing for cycling and outdoor activities. Days are typically warm, bright and considerably drier than a UK winter, making it easy to spend more time outside.
Our advice
Check the forecast before setting out and dress in layers, particularly for early-morning rides. By the afternoon, you may well be wishing you had left those extra layers at home! Stay hydrated and always wear high SPF sun cream
Summer — sunshine, beaches and a more tropical feel
Summer brings a completely different side of Florida. Warm temperatures, abundant sunshine and a distinctly tropical atmosphere make it the perfect season for enjoying the beaches, swimming pools and the Gulf Coast.
You can cycle anytime of day in the summer although many prefer to ride in the mornings before the heat builds up and then spend the afternoon either sight-seeing, on the beach or just relaxing around the pool.
Warm evenings are perfect for dining outdoors, watching the sunset or simply enjoying the relaxed Florida lifestyle.
There is no need to wait for winter to enjoy Florida. Whether you are looking for an active winter escape, a summer beach holiday, or simply a change of pace and plenty of sunshine, Florida has something to offer throughout the year.

Considerably less rain than the UK winter
Long hours of daylight
Predominantly flat terrain
A mixture of dedicated cycle trails and quieter roads
Beautiful coastal scenery
Plenty of opportunities to stop at cafés and enjoy a leisurely break
Morning temperatures can, however, be noticeably cooler than the afternoon, while coastal winds can be a factor on exposed routes.

Is cycling safe in Florida?
Cycling anywhere in the world has its risks and Florida is, of course, no different. As with all countries, riding with common sense is the key to safe riding. However, there is an abundance of cycling trails that can take you for rides of over 100 miles with limited or no contact with the roads. These are not like cycle lanes which are merely painted on the road and sharing the road with other cars. Most of these trails are away from roads completely or completely zoned off with concrete kerbstones for safety. It is illegal to cycle on the Interstate routes and busy main routes are not recommended.
Our advice, keep to the trails where you can, if you have to use the roads, avoid large junctions and use the excellent ‘pelican’ style crossing instructions to cross safely as though you were a pedestrian.
Drivers in St Petersburg are mostly extremely courteous and give you right of way but, just like in the UK, some don’t pay attention so don’t assume that you have been seen. Be visible + Care + Common Sense = Safe riding.
